Description

Nowadays, efficient health monitoring is becoming increasingly important, given the ageing of population and the combined action of an increase in obesity level and cardio-related pathologies. In this context, photoplethysmography (PPG) appears to be a key technology allowing non-invasive monitoring of vital biological indicators such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and blood pressure.

An ultra-low power innovative photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor has been designed, fabricated and successfully tested at ICLAB. The aim of this project is to integrate this sensor in a compact system on board to demonstrate the potential of this technology. The system comprises two PPG sensors connected to the same control unit ensuring the synchronous control and data acquisition from the two sensors. The minimum requirements on the system include:

  • a microcontroller programmed to control the two chips (generate control phases) and acquire the data from the two on-chip ADCs.
  • A PC interface (USB or Bluetooth) through which the data is transferred from the sensor to the PC.
  • a minimum software for real-time processing of the acquired data on the PC and setting the microcontroller options.
  • analog bias signals
  • a DAC for controlling analog current level

Tasks

  • Understand the sensor operation from the team
  • Specify the different building block of the system
  • Design the PCB
  • Program the microcontroller board
  • Setup the interface with the PC
